Fun Day at the Zoo

We bought a zoo membership last year and hadn’t been back. I renewed it through 2020. We need to make 3 visits between now and then to make the zoo pass break-even. Maybe just 2 visits if we bring some friends/family.

Anyhow, we finally made our first trip of 2018 to the zoo. We got there just in time for the dolphin show, which Adelaide LOVED! Emerson was scared at first, but go into it as the show progressed. He especially liked clapping. After the show, we saw giraffes, rhinos, and bison. Adelaide kept saying she wanted to see more animals. Emerson was pretty scared of all of them until we saw the Painted Dogs. They were about 5 feet away, sleeping behind glass. He quickly recognized them as “roof-roofs” and banged on the glass to get their attention. After that, all the animals were fun for him. He probably liked the penguins best because there were so many of them and they were very active.

After polar bears, which we lucked into seeing get fed, we decided to leave. Emerson wanted to run with Adelaide and ran nearly the entire way back to the car. He obviously slept the entire trip home. As did Adelaide and mommy.

This is a week’s supply of milk for our family. During our travels, we could only hold 2 gallons at a time. It was very fun to see how milk prices differed all around the country. Thankfully, it’s under $1.00/gallon here – which is the cheapest we experienced. Eggs are cheapest here as well at about $0.50/dozen.

Emerson is becoming a daredevil climber. Between his lack of fear and his sister’s extreme pain tolerance, we’re in for an exciting next few years.

The kids have been very helpful the last few days. Cleaning windows, helping mommy set up her classroom, and being generally tidy. We rewarded them with donuts, playground time, and reading books – as any parent should.

To cap off a great week, I played in a volleyball tournament downtown Chicago. My team won our division, the Intermediate Coed 6s. It felt great to get a win and the competition was just right for a super fun day. I just wish Karissa could have played.
