Deming, New Mexico: Rockhounding & New Tires

As we continue making our way west, we found a fun little stop in Deming, New Mexico. They have a state park called “Rockhound State Park” that allows/encourages “rockhounding”. Rockhounding is a fancy way to say looking for cool rocks. The state park has a high concentration of geodes and thunder eggs due to volcanic activity long ago. We didn’t have much luck finding geodes or thunder eggs, but found some rocks we liked and had another fun hike in the mountains.

While in Deming, we also decided it was time to get new tires on the 5th wheel. One of the four has had very little tread for too long, so we finally decided to address it. We found a great local shop that replaced all four for just over $100/tire in about a half hour. We can now feel at ease on the road, especially Karissa.

Overall, we were very disappointed in Deming. It didn’t really have any charm. Just a run down town in the desert. The RV park we stayed at was basically a gravel lot, but all of the hookups worked, they had a cute little playground, and it only cost $14/night with our Passport America membership. That’s a pretty good deal given the great weather.

  1. Haha most of NM is gravel lots FYI. And deming isn’t a place I’d want to stop and visit. It’s called the arm out of NM for a reason!!!

    1. We weren’t aware of that nickname. It was a pretty depressing town. No cute little stores. Not even any decent little restaurants. But it was cheap, safe, and warm.
