Time Apart for Home Renovation

When we bought our home in 2012, the plan was to completely renovate it. The first floor was 95% done when Adelaide was born in 2015. Since then, the basement has been gutted down to the studs. We had planned to get the basement completed in the 3 months between my last day of work and Emerson’s birth, but it didn’t quite happen that quickly. Anyhow, now that our road trip adventure is over, it’s time to re-focus on finishing the basement renovation!

Karissa took the kids to the lake for most of the last week so I could have uninterrupted days of work. I did some framing around the bathroom ceiling. It used to have a drop ceiling, but we hate those and will be putting up drywall instead. I also rejiggered some ductwork so that we won’t need an unsightly soffit in the middle of an otherwise flat wall. I replaced old R-11 insulation with new R-15 insulation and added a vapor barrier. We’re moving the water heater after moving the furnace to create a 5th bedroom in what used to be the furnace/water heater room. The room need some framing and reconfiguring of the electrical, but shouldn’t be too bad. It’s the next job on my list. Hopefully, we’re ready for drywall by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, in Wisconsin at the lake, the kids and Karissa had fun with Mimi and Grandpa. They played, went to garage sales, Menards, and boat rides. They saw cousins and Aunt & Uncles too! Karissa and Mimi also resumed a job that’s been on hold since 2012 in refinishing some old doors.

I think I’ve mentioned it before, but Karissa and I are huge fans of Whole30 to assist in losing weight and resetting the digestive system. It’s a simple diet plan that requires you not eat added sugar, legumes, alcohol, dairy, and grains for 30 days. The idea is that these are the most inflammatory foods and removing them reduces inflammation. There’s no portion control, which is why I approve. Anyhow, Karissa has done it on and off since February and is down over 15 pounds. When we’re together, I also mostly eat Whole30, but since I’m not trying to lose weight or worried about inflammation, don’t stress about cheating.

Anyhow, Karissa is now on day 8 of Whole30. While she was gone, I stuck to eating “whole foods”, but added some non-compliant things like legumes since I consider them to be “real” food.
