Karissa had her final visit with Super Doc. They almost didn’t want to see her again, but decided it doesn’t hurt to have one more visit. The last two visits were essentially a final check to make sure surgery was off the table to fix the nerve issue.
They were impressed with Karissa’s range of motion. We had hoped they’d do the needle test to see if signals were getting to the final muscle, but they said the results wouldn’t change treatment. Karissa is worried that the muscle isn’t getting signals and will die, but we don’t have proof either way…and sadly, there’s not treatment option at this point.
The whole ordeal has been frustrating to say the least. Going in for a “routine” procedure to remove a lymph node – which caused a nerve to be damaged and ongoing pain, weakness, and possibly a dead muscle – wasn’t the expected outcome.
Karissa says the injury has impeded her ability to bond with our son. She couldn’t hold him during his first year of life because it hurt her shoulder. She can’t play on some playground equipment with Adelaide. She can’t run as often as she’d like. She can’t play volleyball and softball with our friends. Physical therapy and twice daily exercises suck up a lot of time. All for a “routine” procedure? A tough pill to swallow.
Super Doc and her team were wonderful, as I’ve said with each visit. They do medicine the right way. They evaluate you, order tests right away, and then go over those tests all in one visit. It’s far superior to the typical way medicine is done with multiple visits over weeks and weeks with countless co-pays. Hopefully medicine is headed the way Super Doc runs her office.
Sorry Karissa was/is in such pain from this procedure 🙁
Thanks. It definitely wasn’t the expected outcome/recovery timeline for the “routine” procedure last year.
